The 30 Y3a's were delivered from ALCO during 1923 and were used on most parts of the N&W system. They were virtually identical to the earlier Y3 class, but had a boiler inspection hatch behind the water delivery pipe on the left side and pulled the larger 15,000 gallon, 20 ton coal tenders (Tom Dressler collection) |

Y3a's had Duplex Type D-1 stokers (the large tubes on either side of the clam-shell type Shoemaker Vertical Automatic Firedoor) and Chambers Inside Connected Dome Throttle.
