             and the road number placed onto the factory applied label.

  1A -  The entire carbody with railings and grab irons red. The wheels and trucks black.  N&W was stenciled in white (probably 9") on the center of  
  the side with the cab number below. There were periods after the N. and the W. The roof was brown initially and became black over time.  
   
  1B -  Virtually the same as 1A but it had Norfolk & Western stenciled in smaller letters below the number.  Another stenciling below Norfolk & Western  
  identified those cabs equipped with air brakes.    
   
  1C - The name Norfolk & Western appeared in 4" letters above the N&W (no periods after the N and the W) which were probably 9" high.  The end platforms,  
  steps, railings, and grabe irons were black.  The roof was either canvas appearing brown or after being replaced the metal panels was painted brown.  
  Over time the roof became black.  This scheme was first applied to the CF class that were first constructed in 1914.    
   
  1D - Virtually the same as 1C but the N&W was eliminated and the Norfolk & Western in 4" lettering centered on the side with the number below   
  in 7" lettering.  This scheme was first applied to the CG class beginning in 1927.    
   
  1E - This scheme was adopted in late 1934 and changed the size of the stenciling of the words Norfolk & Western from 4" to 7".  The number  
  below remained at 7" in height.  The Norfolk & western was centered on the cab side and located 7" between the side windows. Otherwise it remained the  
  same as 1D. This scheme was applied to all CH and C-1 cabs and to most CF and CG cabs.    
   
  1F - This scheme was adopted in Dec of 1947.  It replaced the ampersand (&) with "and".  The red, black, and brown paints were applied unchanged from the  
  1C, 1D, and 1E schemes.  All C-2 and most of the CF, CG, and CH cabs received this scheme.  It is unlikely any C-1 cabs ever received it.  
   
  1G -  In March of 1953 the N&W began coating cab roofs with an asphaltic paint that was dark brown.  This dark brown quickly became a faded black.  Other  
  than the roof it remained the same as a 1F.  It was applied to all C-3 cabs and to most if not all CF, CG, CH, and C-2 cabs.    
   
  1H - Adopted in 1964 this scheme was major change in years.  The entire body was painted red including the roof.  All stenciling was white with a 36"  
  "half-moon" N&W emblem with the Norfolk and Western being changed from Roman to Gothic and Norfolk and Western being in 12' high letters and the  
  number below being in 9" numerals.  The cab road number was also added in 9" numerals on the copula between the end windows while bay window  
  cabs Handrails, grab irons, had the number on their upper ends. and ladders were painted yellow. The end platforms and underbody were black.  Many of the      
  merger road cabs and original N&W cabs received this scheme.    
   
  1I - This scheme was the same as 1H except the roof was painted aluminum.    
   
  1J - This scheme was the same as 1H except the roof was painted black.  Schemes 1H, 1I, and 1J were essentially used simultaneously  
   
  2A - Was adopted in 1966 was another major change.  The entire car body including the roof was painted blue.  The under frame and trucks were black.  
  The stenciling/lettering was the same as 1H except they were yellow.  The upper ends of the cabs were a combination of red and yellow diagonal stripes.  
  A 4" yellow stripe ran the length of the cab at the bottom of each side of the cab's body.  Handrails, grab irons, and ladders were yellow.  All C-31 cabs  
  were delivered in this scheme and many merger and former cabs received it. Later variations included galvanized steel roofs along with other minor variations.  
   
  2B -  Was identical to 2A except the roof was painted aluminum.    
   
  3A -  In 1971 N&W returned to painting cabs red.  With the red in this scheme NW replaced the "half-moon" N&W emblem and no longer was Norfolk and  
  Western spelled out.  The copula ends continued to have the cab number located between the windows and the bay window cabs had the number on  
  their upper ends.  C-32 cabs were delivered in this scheme and many older cabs were repainted into it.    
   
  3AP - In the early 1970's the N&W began designating cabooses for Pool Service allowing them to be used anywhere on the N&W system.  The key   
  additions here were the re-designating of the class with the following letter P.  Also around the top of copulas and on the  top edge of bay windows had a 5"  
  white stripe applied.
