What is a moderated e-mail list?

Subscribers to our mailing list send e-mails (or posts) for the group to a special address, such as NW-Mailing-List@nwhs.org. All e-mails sent to the list address are reviewed by our volunteer moderators who screen them for relevance and appropriateness. After review, the posts are forwarded to all the other subscribers to the list.

A side effect of moderation is that it may take a day or so for your question or comment to be broadcast to the rest of the subscribers on the list.

After your question is sent to the list, other subscribers will submit their answers back to the list address. The answers are then sent to everyone on the list so you and all the other subscribers can read them.

You can read past messages in our mailing list archives.

Will my email address be made public? Will I get junk-email because I joined?

No. Our policy is to NOT release personal email addresses in ANY message unless you explicitly ask in that message for us to do so. This prevents you from being exposed to junk email, or "spam". Any reply messages that come back to the moderator asking to speak to you directly will usually be honored, time permitting. (This is a cooperative and volunteer effort, remember.)

Addresses are listed on the NW-Sell-List so salers can easily contacted by buyers (a simple email reply).

How much traffic is there on the list?

Normally there is a modest but lively amount of discussion, maybe 8 to 10 messages per day on average. The default mode is to receive each post as it is released by the moderator. If you wish, you can select a digest-mode which groups each day's posts into one or two larger e-mails a day.

How many lists are there?

The N&W Historical Society currently supports four mailing lists:

The NW-Mailing-List covers historical and prototype questions concerning the Norfolk and Western, the Virginian Railway and related railroads.

The NW-Modeling-List discusses upcoming product releases and scale modeling of the N&W and Virginian Railways.

The NW-Sell-List is for selling and buying N&W and Virginian items.

The NW-Free-Mo-List discusses building N&W and Virginian-oriented Free-Mo modular layouts for display at the N&WHS conventions.
