Mainline to Norfolk

Thursday, June 21, through Sunday, June 24

Location: Lynchburg, VA, on the Mainline between Roanoke and Norfolk, VA.

Areial view of Island Yard After ten long years, welcome back to Lynchburg! Join us as we learn about our beloved Norfolk & Western and the Virginian. Each railroad was known for its coal hauling capabilities in addition to passenger and freight. A lot of the freight and coal came right through the Central Virginia city of Lynchburg (on the N&W) and Altavista (on the Virginian) as it made its way to Norfolk. Both lines are still heavily used today.

Come and put a face with those names that you have seen in The Arrow and on internet lists. Our clinics, model and photo contests, and media presentations promise be the best ever. When it’s time to Kemper Street Station take a break, head out to the tracks to watch the numerous NS and CSX trains pass through. For those that enjoy the excitement of passenger trains, Amtrak’s Crescent (trains 19/20) stops daily at the refurbished former Southern Railway Kemper Street Station (there’s some N&W history there too). Amtrak’s Northeast Regional terminates in Lynchburg between shuttles to Boston.

Saturday’s bus tour will present the opportunity for a little of everything: Lynchburg view towards James River stations, junctions, and other historical locations. We’re still finalizing the list of stops so stay tuned. Saturday’s banquet will be a treat as Aubrey Wiley will “teach” us about our railroads. The retired teacher, historian, author, and photographer will share from his knowledge of the Virginian Railway. His banquet program is titled "Why We Remember the Virginian".

Don’t miss our farewell breakfast and membership meeting. This is your chance to communicate with Society leaders. You may find an area of the Society in which you can volunteer!
